On Water

I love bottled water without remorse. I hear the whispers and the derogatory snickers when I carry a bottle in public.  I sense the eyes burning a hole into the back of my head as i sip from my 33.8 oz plastic container filled with something most people refuse to buy.  I am aware of the stigma associated with us bottled water drinkers.  I just don’t care.

Bottled water can be very divisive, but I think the opponents of buying or drinking it are confused as to why people consume earth’s resource in such a manner.  I drink bottled water because it is practical.  I like having a portable container of water on my person while running errands on a hot day, as opposed to a water jug filled with tap water or even a Gatorade, even if it is on sale 2 for $3 at 7-11.  Let me demonstrate….

Person X:  ”Hey, nice FIGI water.  You realize you just paid $3 for something that comes straight out of your tap, right?”

Me:  ”Yeah, thanks for the reminder.  I forgot that most of our society has had running water since the late 19th century.”

Person X:  ”No, no, Im just saying you’re throwing your money away by purchasing it in that form.  Seems like a waste of money.”

Me:  ”Is that a Gatorade you’ve got there?”

Person X:  ”Yes.  I love Gatorade, especially on a hot day.”

Me: “You know, Gatorade sells powder mix at the grocery store so you can make it at home.  Its probably waaaaaaaay cheaper to do that than just buy a new, penis-shaped bottle of it every time you are thirsty.”

Person X:  ”I do have the mix at home, as a matter of fact.  I just didn’t carry it with me today because I don’t have a travel container to put it in.”

Me:  *twists off cap to bottled water*  ”Interesting…”

If the conversation escalates and Person X uses the words, “carbon footprint” at any point it may get heated.  But, I still think I can win a Carbon Footprint Contest with just about anyone I know, so it will be a lost cause to even bring it up.  Just leave me alone to get the oil changed in my car with a cool bottle of water to drink while i sit in the waiting room.  3 months, not 3000 miles since the last time I was there.

if left to my own “Id” I would often shut people up after they voiced their opinion. However, I am afraid of prison.
