often in pop culture, trends and fads come and go but many times they are recycled after a certain period of time. this is why you saw flared jeans in 1996, its a thirty year cycle. they were popular for ten years, very unpopular for ten years, then gradually became more and more popular for over the course of the last ten years leading up to 1996. only the true rogues wore them after 1986 and stopped before 1996, when you could buy l.e.i. bellbottoms at kohl’s. it seems to me that this is the same thing that happens to movies or comedy, especially when said items also created changes in pop culture.
