| the new “where the wild things are” movie sucks in principal. im sure it will be a fine adaptation of the book that will introduce the story to a new generation. but here is why it is problematic. any time a movie is made that is a remake of some nostalgic, obscure thing from childhood, everyone assumes incorrectly that they used to like it or it was they’re favorite book and it becomes hipster-buzz worthy. this usually follows three stages.
1) “did you hear, they are making a ‘where the wild things are’ movie’? “no, i haven’t.” ”you really should check it out it was my favorite book growing up.”
2) “did you hear, they are making a ‘where the wild things are’ movie?” “yes.” “i can’t wait for it, it was my favorite book growing up.” “i know mine too”.
3) “did you hear, they are making a ‘where the wild things are’ movie?” “yeah, it was my favorite book growing up.” “me too, i think my mom still has my copy at home with all of my other childhood books, including goodnight moon..”
*notice how now it has become some sort of shooting of the cuffs competition as to who is more in the know. this is generally how a person’s overall “coolness” is determined in most cultures, but particularly rampant in hipster social circles. f this movie and anyone who gets a t shirt of it made at strange cargo.

Definitely not the case. I fell in love with the trailer for this movie and have been following its development for a while. I vaguely remembered the illustrations for the book but never claimed it as being my favorite book growing up.
Anyway, people keep throwing the word “hipster” around too much in regard to this movie. It’s getting ridiculous.
dude that was my favorite book growing up.
