you can have your widemouth starbucks cappuccino cup. or your fancy pier 1 glass-handle coffee cup. or any other container that goes beyond the basic. endorsement: the standard white coffee mug. necessity is the mother of invention, and nothing proves it like this. i believe most people own at least one standard white coffee mug but nobody can remember buying it. usually it is a hand-me-down from the folks or an old roommates- a promotional cup that has the prudential logo or village of skokie on the side. this is not the “i have company over in the morning so ill get the matching quaint ceramic cups and we’ll drink french roast while sitting in adirondack chairs on my deck that overlooks a foggy seattle harbor and talk about interesting things” mug. this cup is the one that you use on a sunday morning while doing dishes in sweatpants with AM radio on in the background, taking a break to check on the bacon which is sizzling slowly in a cast iron frypan. after the first cup you can see coffee spots on the side and hairline cracks in the porcelain stained dark brown. by the last cup, all the dishes are done and washing this mug concludes the morning coffe eexperience. standard. unassuming. simple. ready to start the day.
